Born 9 December 1976 in Kyoto‚ Japan‚ was licensed as a jockey in 1996 and didn't have to wait too long until he landed his first JpnGr.1 race in the Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) on Primo Ordine in April 1999. He won the Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes on the best horse he has ridden‚ Eishin Preston‚ in December 1999. Eishin Preston catapulted Fukunaga to international prominence with wins in last year's Hong Kong Mile and the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup in April 2002.

Born 28 January 1956 in Rio de Janeiro‚ followed in the footsteps of his grandfather and father to become a jockey and was an outstanding rider in Brazil where he was champion in 1973 and 1974. Has since switched back and forth between his homeland and his current base in Southern California where he has enjoyed plenty of success.

Born 6 June 1968‚ rode his first winner in 1984 and was champion apprentice a year later. Won a retainer for top owner Daniel Wildenstein and was champion jockey in France for the first time in 1991and won it again in 1998‚ 2001 and also this year. His major wins in 2002 were in the Gr.1 French Oaks on Bright Sky and in the Prix Ganay on Aquarelliste.

Born 29 September 1973‚ rode his first winner in 1990 and spent 1996 to 1998 riding over fences and enjoyed some notable success over the jumps. Group race glory started to flow in 1999 and 2000 and he rode his first pair of Gr.1 winners for English trainer John Dunlop in the Gr.1 Preis von Europa on Golden Snake and Gr.1 Prix du Cadran on San Sebastian. Finished in third place in the French jockeys' title in 2001 with 109 winners. Managed just one winner from 80 rides in Hong Kong during the winter of 2000/2001.

Cahill‚ Michael

Born 16 January 1965‚ has ridden over 2000 career winners in Australia and placed third in the Brisbane jockeys' premiership in 2000 and 2001. His biggest career win was aboard Falvelon in the Doomben 10‚000 and he was the dual HK Sprint winner's regular rider until a race fall cost him the ride prior to the horse's initial HK Sprint success. Cahill had ridden 18 winners from over 300 rides in Hong Kong by 5 December‚ his biggest success arriving on Able Choice in the HKGr.3 Juvenile Sprint Trophy last May.

Born 18 July 1981‚ is in his fifth season as a jockey in HK (began 1998/99). Was apprenticed to the David Hayes stable and he had ridden 80 winners up until 2002/03 with his best season 37 winners in 2000/01‚ the season he lost his claim. Biggest winner to date remains his HKGr.3 success in the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup in 2001 on Man Of Honour for Ivan Allan.

Aged 43‚ a former champion jockey in South Africa‚ has been associated with some of the great names of the turf - horses‚ trainers and owners‚ you name it - in his homeland. He has won South Africa's most important race‚ the Rothmans July‚ on three occasions and he has landed quite a few of the main Hong Kong prizes‚ too‚ such as the Centenary Sprint Cup (HKGr.1) on King Of Danes. Coetzee‚ now a veteran of the Hong Kong scene‚ is retained jockey to the Tony Cruz stable. He spent seven seasons‚ on and off‚ with Brian Kan Ping-chee before moving for one season to David Hill and then on to Cruz. He is as an outstanding judge of pace‚ powerful in the finish and his perfectly rated front-running tactics have won him stacks of races down through the years.

Born 22 March 1983‚ in Scotland. He was granted his riding licence at the end of December 1999 and rode his first winner‚ Shontaine‚ on 10 January 2000‚ on only his fourth ride. Having finished his first year with an excellent 45 winners from 460 rides and spent time in Dubai as second jockey to trainer Erwan Charpy. Notched 65 wins in 2001‚ but it was in 2002 that he made a name for himself on the world stage. He won his first Gr.1 on Yavana's Pace in the Credit Suisse Private Banking Pokal at Cologne in August. He also enjoyed Pattern success when Gateman won the Gr.3 Minstrel Stakes at The Curragh in July.

Will celebrate his 32nd birthday on the day of the HKIR 2002. The Italian is perhaps the most recognisable jockey in the world and has achieved enormously in a brilliant career. He was Britain's champion apprentice in 1989 and has since won the Jockeys' Championship in Britain on two occasions. By the time he made history riding all seven winners on one incredible Saturday at Ascot in September 1996‚ he was already firmly positioned as the top jockey to the Godolphin operation. Dettori has ridden well over 100 Gr.1 winners all over the world and his record in Hong Kong is also excellent having won the Hong Kong Cup in 2000 on Fantastic Light‚ the 1996 Hong Kong Vase on Luso and the QEII Cup in the same year aboard Overbury.

Born 8 June 1973‚ was champion jockey in South Australia in 1997/98 and 1999/00. He is in his third season as a jockey in HK. He had no winners up until 2001/02 as his first season curtailed by injury after 18 rides but he more than made up for it last year with an excellent 32 winners last season‚ which earned him a Club Jockey's licence for 2002/03. He also landed his first ever Gr.1 win on Charming City in the Chairman's Sprint Prize last April.

Aged 36‚ was born in New Zealand but arrived in Sydney in 1985 and has since become the second most successful jockey ever to ride in Australia behind Mick Dittman. Dye has ridden the winners of 94 Gr.1 races including the Melbourne Cup (Tawriffic)‚ Cox Plate (Octagonal)‚ and four consecutive Golden Slippers (Courtza‚ Canny Lad‚ Tierce‚ Burst). Also won two Sydney jockeys' premierships. This is his third full season riding in Hong Kong where most of his winners (over 130 to date) have stemmed from the stables of David Hayes and John Size.

Aged 33‚ is one of Japan's most successful jockeys and in his fifteen seasons to date has ridden over 1100 winners. 2001 was a good year for Ebina‚ with JpnGr.1 wins in the in the Japanese St Leger‚ Sprinters' Stakes and Takamatsunomiya Kinen. He is probably best known for his association with El Condor Pasa‚ whom he rode to victory in the 1998 Japan Cup‚ and also in that horse's 1999 European campaign which culminated in a gallant second to Montjeu in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Born in South Africa 38 years ago‚ is in his sixth season riding in Hong Kong and having come within three winners of champion Basil Marcus in 1998-1999 (despite missing three months of the season)‚ he won the jockey's title a year later with 74 winners. Has now ridden well over 250 winners in Hong Kong. Enjoyed a very successful partnership with Fairy King Prawn‚ winning the 2000 Yasuda Kinen on him. Also won the Hong Kong Derby on Keen Winner in 2000 and‚ on Electronic Unicorn‚ the Stewards' Cup early in 2002‚ one of the few highlights in a year he would rather forget owing to a charge of cheating at gambling which forced him out of HK racing for nine months. Was found not guilty last month and has linked up again with HK's reigning Horse of the Year since winning a Club Jockey's licence again.

Born 27 February 1972‚ rode in his first winner in March 1991. He was ranked third in the Japanese jockeys' table through to 2 December 2002‚ by which point he had accumulated 858 career wins. He has seven Graded Stakes races in Japan this season‚ including the JpnGr.1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen on Hong Kong Sprint mount Shonan Kampf on whom he also won the JpnGr.2 Swan Stakes. Fujita also won the JpnGr.1 Takarazuka Kinen aboard Dantsu Flame in June. He tied for 3rd place with HK's Eric Saint-Martin in the World Super Jockeys Series at Hanshin on 30 November/1 December.

Aged 30‚ rode his first winner in 1990‚ and was champion apprentice the following year. In 1994 he joined Mark Johnston as stable jockey‚ a short lived association that Holland ended that winter‚ going off to ride in Hong Kong. He finished fourth in the jockeys' championship in Hong Kong that year‚ and returned the following year to finish third. From Hong Kong he travelled to Japan for three months‚ winning the JpnGr.2 Mainichi Okan on Annus Mirabilis for Saeed bin Suroor. His first Gr.1 win came on My Emma in the Yorkshire Oaks in 1997. Holland has ridden over 100 winners in each of the past two British seasons.

Born 11 January 1973 in Ireland‚ served his apprenticeship under his father Dessie‚ the trainer and former leading National Hunt jockey. Though Richard enjoyed good success over the jumps‚ he moved to Britain in 1994 to pursue a career as a Flat jockey and has since managed to keep the weight of his tall frame well in check. Won his first Gr.1 in the 1995 Gran Premio di Milano on Posidonas and a year later won the Italian Derby in 1996 on Bahamian Knight. Is the retained jockey for Khalid Abdullah and he finished 2nd in the British Jockeys' Championship this year with 126 winners.

Born 24 March 1967‚ rode his first winner in 1985 but it wasn't until 1991 that things really took off for him with Gr.1 winners on Subotica‚ Victoire Bleu and Tel Quel. A year later he won the Arc on Subotica and he also won the race in 1994 on Carnegie‚ with Andre Fabre training both winners. He was France's champion jockey for four consecutive years from 1992 to 1995. Won the 2000 Guineas in England on Pennekamp in 1995. This year's big winners have come via Marotta in the Gr.1 Prix de Saint-Alary and Ange Gabriel in the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Born 22 June 1959‚ has over 70 Gr.1 winners to his name including two Prix de l'Arc de Triomphes (Carroll House‚ Montjeu)‚ four King Georges‚ the Belmont Stakes in America (Go And Go)‚ Breeders' Cups (Johannesburg and High Chaparral)‚ the Melbourne Cup (Vintage Crop)‚ two Hong Kong Derbies (Sound Print‚ Che Sara Sara) etc. Won his 11th Irish jockeys' title on 10 November. Made his first visit to Hong Kong in 1986/87 and has since ridden 156 winners in 14 stints here. Currently the retained rider to the powerful Aidan O'Brien stable in Ireland.

Aged 36‚ won the Breeders' Cup Turf on Miss Alleged in 1991 and soon afterwards was persuaded to move to Hong Kong by former boss Patrick Biancone with whom he enjoyed plenty of success including the Hong Kong Derby on Helene Star in 1993 and Johan Cruyff in 1998. He is married to former apprentice Sherie Kong‚ and is now a Club jockey. Legrix has racked up well over 300 winners in Hong Kong with his best season being in 1997/98 with 41 triumphs. He has previously won the HKGr.2 Queen Mother's Cup and the HKGr.3 Centenary Vase on Vase mount Rainbow And Gold.

Born 14 April 1970 in South Africa‚ was the jockey of one of the all-time greats of the turf in South Africa‚ the Triple Crown winner‚ Horse Chestnut. This is his fifth season as a jockey in HK‚ his first being a brief spell in 1992/93. Had ridden 124 winners up until this season with his haul 62 winners last term his best. Biggest HK wins have been for Ivan Allan for whom he regularly rides nowadays in the 2001 Chairman's Sprint Prize on Fairy King Prawn and the HK Classic Mile and HK Derby double on Olympic Express last season.

Born 3 January 1968 in the south west of France‚ was champion apprentice in 1984. His first Gr.1 winner was on the Francois Doumen-trained Double Bed in Florida in 1988. He has since ridden well over 40 Group 1 winners in Europe. The biggest success of his career remains the triumph of Saumarez in the 1990 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He was signed up as the Aga Khan's retained rider in France in 1993 and kept the partnership intact for over eight years. Is in his 10th season riding in Hong Kong and he has ridden over 200 winners here including two Hong Kong Derbies‚ and his biggest money-spinner‚ Jim And Tonic‚ on whom he won the Hong Kong Bowl‚ Hong Kong Cup and AP QEII Cup.

Born in California 21 October 1970‚ rode his first winner in 1988 and became the leading apprentice in Southern California a year later. Nakatani has won five Breeders' Cups: the 1996 Distaff (Jewel Princess)‚ the 1996 Sprint (Lit de Justice)‚ the 1997 Sprint (Elmhurst)‚ 1998 Sprint (Reraise)‚ the 1999 Mile (Silic). Reraise‚ incidentally‚ was trained by his brother-in-law‚ Craig Dollase. Nakatani rode his 2000th career win in 1999 and he has also won the Golden Shaheen in Dubai on Caller One. He was a nose away from winning the Japan Cup on Sarafan on 24 November.

Aged 27‚ established himself as one of Melbourne's leading apprentices as a teenager under the guidance of Mick Crawford at Caulfield before transferring to Jim Riley at the same track then having a stint with Bruce McLachlan in Brisbane. He has notched some 720 winners during his career‚ 10 at Gr.1 level‚ including two Blue Diamond Stakes‚ a Crown Oaks‚ Underwood Stakes and Sires' Produce Stakes. Has also proved himself on the international stage‚ having ridden with success in Hong Kong (six winners from 135 rides in 1997/98)‚ Malaysia and Singapore where he has previously been a leading rider. He is currently in the top 10 jockeys on the Melbourne racing scene.

Born in Perth on 22 July 1972‚ is widely regarded at Australia's best jockey. He is the winner of six Melbourne Jockeys' Premierships and 60 Group 1 wins‚ the most recent being his victory on Media Puzzle in the Melbourne Cup on 5 November. It was his second Melbourne Cup win after Doriemus in 1995. Oliver has also won two Cox Plates (Dane Ripper and Northerly)‚ four Caulfield Cups‚ AJC Derby etc. Has won the Hong Kong Sprint twice on Falvelon.

Aged 35‚ born in Peru where he was the leading jockey‚ aged 17. Moved to America aged 19. Three times the leading jockey in the USA‚ Prado rode 536 winners in 1997‚ becoming only the fourth jockey to ride over 500 winners in America in a season. Has registered more than 4‚000 career wins. Won the Belmont Stakes at odds of 70/1 in 2002 on Sarava.

Quinn‚ Richard

Born 2 December 1961 in Scotland‚ is listed on racecards as T Quinn‚ from his first name Thomas‚ but is known by his middle name Richard. He began a 17-year association with trainer Paul Cole in 1981 and was champion apprentice in 1984. He won both the Irish St Leger and Irish Oaks in 1990. In the same year he secured his first British Classic success‚ scoring on Snurge in the St Leger. The following season‚ however‚ Quinn was dramatically jocked off Generous‚ who later went on to win Epsom and Irish Derbies and the King George. Quinn went freelance in the late 1990s before being snapped up as stable jockey by Henry Cecil. He won two British Classics in 2000 - the Oaks in 2000 for Cecil on Love Divine and the St Leger on John Dunlop's Millenary.

Aged 37‚ is in his 10th season as a Club Jockey in Hong Kong having started in 1993/94. He is approaching the 300 winners landmark and his best season was 49 winners in 1998/99. His short head win on Oriental Express in the 1999 HKGr.1 Champions & Chater Cup remains one of his best successes in HK. The undoubted career highlight came with Urban Sea's victory in the 1993 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He is the son of Yves Saint-Martin‚ one of the greatest riders in French racing history.

Born 25 January 1967 in England but raised in South Africa‚ is doing particularly well in his first Hong Kong spell and his good form was rewarded with an extension of his Club Jockeys' licence until March 2003. His biggest in HK to date was on Red Pepper in the HKGr.3 International Cup Trial in November. Has won about 800 races in South Africa (including the South African Derby)‚ Mauritius‚ Australia and Singapore.

Born 22 May 1977‚ was champion apprentice in Ireland when indentured to the John Oxx stable. Smullen was appointed as Dermot Weld's stable jockey when Mick Kinane took up the post as first jockey to Aidan O'Brien. Has twice won the Flat jockeys' title in Ireland in 2000 and 2001. Has won the Gr.1 Irish St Leger (twice) and Gr.1 Prix Royal Oak (on Vinnie Roe)‚ the Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes‚ Gr.1 National Stakes on Refuse To Bend. Rode four winners from 73 rides in 1999/2000 during a winter stint in Hong Kong.

Born 4 June 1981‚ and raised in Brussels. In 1996 he moved to Chantilly to become apprentice to Cedric Boutin. His first winner arrived in 1997 and he became champion apprentice in 1999 and soon after was installed as second jockey behind Olivier Peslier to Andre Fabre. In April 2000 Soumillon won five races in one day (equalling the French record) at Saint-Cloud. Won the French Derby on Anabaa Blue for trainer Carlos Lerner in 2001 and was appointed as retained jockey to Aga Khan with the departure of Gerald Mosse to Hong Kong. Won the Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free in March 2002 on Terre A Terre.

Aged 32‚ Austrian-born but based in Germany where he has champion for the first time this year. His first Group 1 success was on A Magicman in the Prix de la Foret in 1996. Won the 1998 Grosser Preis von Baden. Suborics had much success on Silvano‚ winning the AP QEII Cup‚ the Singapore Cup and the Arlington Million in 2001. He also partnered Paolini to dual Group 1 success in Italy in 2001. Had 6 winners from 84 rides as a Club Jockey last season in Hong Kong.

Born 15 March 1969‚ rode his first winner in 1987 and became champion apprentice that same year. He was champion jockey in Japan 10 times between 1989 and 1999‚ losing it just once in 1991. He enjoys enormous fame and recognition in his homeland where he has won practically everything‚ including the Japan Cup and Japan Derby. Has since enjoyed successful spells in France and America. Won the Gr.1 Prix de l'Abbaye twice and won the Gr.1 Hong Kong Vase last year on Stay Gold.

He has ridden over 400 winners in HK including the Hong Kong Gold Cup and Hong Kong Vase on Indigenous‚ the QEII Cup on the South African-trained London News and Chairman's Prize on Oriental Express and the Centenary Cup on Best Of The Best. Is again the one to beat this year in the HK jockeys' championship.
